Gas Safety – Carbon Monoxide Awareness
Installation, checking and maintenance MUST ONLY be carried out by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. You should Insist on seeing the engineers Gas Safe Register card before allowing work on an appliance and check their competencies are appropriate - see the reverse of their card.
NEVER block or obstruct ventilation grilles, air bricks, air inlets or flues, since this can cause an appliance to malfunction. Although using a Carbon Monoxide Alarm is an excellent precaution, it can never be a substitute for proper installation and maintenance.
Carbon Monoxide signs to look out for on your appliance:
Gas appliances should burn with a steady blue flame (except for some fuel-effect fires which are designed to burn with a yellow flame – see the manufacturers instructions). An unsteady or yellow flame, sooting/scorching/staining around appliances & flues, pilot lights which blow out, excessive room condensation and unusual smells can all be signs of poor combustion and excessive generation of carbon monoxide.
At GasFirst, we recommend a Carbon Monoxide Alarm should be installed in every room where there is a gas appliance.
A faulty boiler can be extremely dangerous, increasing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It's therefore best to get your boiler serviced every year to make sure it's working properly.
To ensure you're getting a good boiler service it helps to know what to expect. Every boiler service will check the following and you`ll receive a certificate once completed.
Flue – Installed correctly and is still working correctly. The flue is the “chimney” of every boiler.
Air – If ventilation is required, we`ll check to see if the air vent is free from blockage. For newer wall hung boilers, we`ll also take an electronic air sample for analysis.
Gas – We`ll check the gas pressure to the boiler and check the pressure as the gas is lit to make sure it`s safe.
Safety – Every boiler has a safety device to shut the gas valve if the flames go out. This is just one of the safety devices checked.
In summary, we`ll ensure the boiler is safe to use.
